Six Ways to Drape a Dupatta (My Mother Taught Me Half of These)

July 3, 2026

Growing up in Punjab, I watched my mother drape the same dupatta five different ways for five different occasions, and each time it looked like a different outfit. That stayed with me. The dupatta is two and a half metres of pure possibility, and most of us use exactly one drape our whole lives.

Here are the six I actually use, roughly in order of how often.

The everyday one-shoulder

Pleat it, put it on one shoulder, pin it so it stays. This is the drape for ninety percent of life. One tip — spend two minutes on the pleats. A neatly pleated dupatta versus a bunched-up one is the difference between put-together and just-woke-up.

Both ends in front

Around the back of the neck, both ends hanging in front like an open shawl. My favourite for long functions where I’m sitting — it doesn’t slide off, and it frames the neckline embroidery instead of hiding it.

The saree-style drape

Tuck one end into the waistband of your palazzo, take it around your back and over the opposite shoulder. Suddenly your kurta set has all the grace of a saree with none of the anxiety. I do this for pujas and it gets compliments every single time.

The belted drape

Drape the dupatta, then cinch a slim belt over it at the waist. This one’s newer — I first saw it at a Delhi wedding a few years ago and immediately copied it. It keeps the dupatta out of your way all evening and makes even a traditional set look current. Try it before you dismiss it.

The cape

Spread evenly across both shoulders so it falls behind you. Only works with dupattas that have a beautiful border — because that’s exactly what it shows off. Very dramatic, very effective at receptions.

The wrist carry

Fold it slim, one shoulder, loop the front end over your wrist. This is my exhibition drape — I’m on my feet all day, arranging racks, and I still want to feel dressed. Both hands free, dupatta intact till evening.

All our sets come with dupattas we’ve chosen because they drape well — flimsy dupattas don’t hold any of these styles. Come play with them in person at our next Pune exhibition, or see what’s new on Instagram.
