I travel with clothes for a living — every exhibition means suitcases of kurtas going across Pune, and family means at least a few out-of-town weddings a year. So when I tell you I’ve opened a suitcase to find a crushed, defeated kurta more times than I can count, know that every tip below was paid for in ironing.
Some fabrics just travel better
Crepe, georgette, viscose blends — these come out of a suitcase looking nearly fresh. Pure cotton and linen come out looking like they fought the zip and lost. If your destination has an iron, carry anything. If you’re not sure, pack the forgiving fabrics and thank yourself later.
Roll, don’t fold
This is the tip I give most often and the one people resist most, until they try it. Fold the kurta in half lengthwise, lay the sleeves flat along the body, roll from the hem up — firm, not tight. Folding makes sharp crease lines; rolling makes none. Rolled kurtas also pack tighter, so the suitcase fits more. I pack every exhibition this way, forty pieces at a time.
Embroidery goes inside out, in the middle
Turn embellished pieces inside out before rolling so the mirrors and threadwork can’t catch on other clothes. The heavy pieces travel in the middle layers of the bag with soft clothes above and below as padding. One snagged mirror on a beautiful yoke will teach you this forever; learn it from me instead.
Dupattas fill the gaps
Fold lengthwise to hand-width, coil tightly, and push into the corners and shoes. They arrive perfect — dupattas always do — and they use up the awkward spaces in the bag.
No iron at the other end?
Hang the kurta in the bathroom while you take a hot shower — ten minutes of steam takes light creases out of georgette and crepe entirely. Shake, hang, done. And for stubborn cotton, remember you’re in India: there’s a press-wallah within walking distance of almost anywhere, and five rupees a piece is the best deal in fashion.
Planning a wedding trip? Tell me on WhatsApp — I’ll point you to the pieces in our stock that travel best, because I’ve personally suitcase-tested most of them. New arrivals on Instagram, as always.
